The Olympic Park
The Olympic Park situated on at the former Green Point Common and today a beautiful park area, lies at the heart of Cape
Town's plans for the 2016 games.
The site is situated just outside the city centre, fifteen minutes from Cape Town international airport and will provide
a breathtaking, compact, secure and easily accesible home for the Games.
Seven new venues will be situated within walking distance of each other, allowing competitors and spectators alike to
experience the unique atmosphere of an Olympic Games within the beautiful park surroundings.
The main 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium with retractabel roof will host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, as well as the
Athletics events.It will sit alongside the planned 16,000 seat Aquatic Centre which will be deisgned specifically for the
future needs of all aquatic athletes in South Africa.
Two Olympic Park arenas will host rythmic gymnastics, handball and wresting, and together will seat 16,000 spectators.
The arenas will be dismantled after the games and be re-used elsewhere where they are needed and will provide a much needed
legacy.
The Park will be well located and is just 5 minutes using Olympic Transport from the Olympic Village at Culemborg. The
village will provide ccommodation for every competitor and official, with 80 per cent within 20 minutes of their event venues.
Large open parks, gardens and spaces for the public will create a lively and beautiful atmosphere for all spectators and
athletes and will be located around water features. The whitewater centre at the centre of the park will provide a great legacy
for the sport as all spectators gain free access to this event providing a lively and exiting atmosphere to this sport.
The Olympic Spear Line, a new high speed train system featuring five dedicated Olympic lanes will allow spectators to
travel to the City Centre on underground lines in one minute. From the city centre, the Olympic Spear Line will ensure the
safe and speedy arrival of athletes to all the venues across the city. The rail service will be well supported by a well located
bus complex and a park and ride scheme located on the outskirts of the city.
The world will meet at the Cape Town Olympic park in Green Point and the venues and facilites will provide a legacy and
future for the entire countries aspiring athletes.
