The Cape Town plan comprises a total of 33 venues for the Olympic Games, through effective sharing of venues. There is a good
use of 18 (56%) existing venues which have planned upgrades and a reasonable budget allocated, and two planned venues (aquatic
centre and tennis centre) to be constructed by 2015. Cape Town proposes 13 (39%) additional venues including 10 temporary
venues based on a good legacy plan for the city/region with permanent venues planned for specific sports needs e.g. aquatics,
athletics, tennis, gymnastics, rowing, canoe-kayak slalom. The sports concept with two clusters ; Olympic Park (6 venues,
10 sports/disciplines) and the City Cluster (8 venues, 10 sports/disciplines) 10 km from the Olympic Village appears well
planned. With the exception of preliminary football venues in Durban and Port Elizabeth, the sailing (45km) and shooting center's
(50km) are the furthest venues from the Olympic Village. The Olympic Park includes the Olympic Village, providing a very good
competition environment for athletes. Construction costs for additional venues appear to be conservative but this is said
to be in line with the low construction costs within the industry. The location of the venue for Shotput on Robben Island,
although with a historical significance, will require a ferry/boat system as detailed, but may need further investigation
in terms of security and logistical problems. The construction of major sports facilities, supported by upgraded existing
sports facilities would leave Cape Town with a significantly enhanced sports legacy especially in those identified previously
disadvantaged communities, which will receive a large majority of the training venues.
